Norman Lockyer Observatory Astroscouts (Sidmouth, Devon)

The Norman Lockyer Observatory run a young observer group called the Astroscouts which operates as a single group, but when appropriate the group is divided into two sections – Junior Astroscouts (aged 8 to 12/13) and the Youth Group (aged 14 to 16/18).

The purpose of Astroscouts is to learn about the night sky through all its seasons. We start by teaching basic skills, such as recognizing constellations and observing the Moon. Also to understand about the Universe with particular reference to our own galaxy and solar system; to develop practical observing skills; and to observe, draw and image objects in the night sky. Practical observing with the observatory telescopes takes place whenever conditions allow.

The emphasis is having fun with astronomy!

The Astroscouts Group meet at Norman Lockyer Observatory, Salcombe Hill Road, Sidmouth, Devon, EX10 0NY at 19:00 on Fridays during term time. Sessions specifically for the Junior Group last around one hour. The Youth Group also meet on Friday evenings, alongside the Junior Group, but students may join in with the adult sections as appropriate and stay until the observatory closes.
